Green Dream: Mastering the Art of Residential Turf Care for a Lush Lawn

Hey Landscape Lovers!

Now that we are finally experiencing some cooler temperatures, I know there are lots of questions on how to prepare for winter! We aren’t quite there yet, but I know that pumpkin spice is definitely in the air! Right now, I think all of our plants are loving these cooler mornings and really showing it with fuller leaves and vibrant blooms. Everyone that has beautiful plants after this brutal summer definitely gets a gold star, so hang in there!

I know that watering schedules can sometimes be overwhelming. So many questions. Am I watering enough? Am I watering too much? What time of day is best? All of these questions and still having to deal with city water restrictions. Yuck!!

I will go into more detail on plant care in our next version, but for now, I want to focus on turf. This is really an integral time of year to ensure a full, thick lawn for next year. For those of you who have recently installed new grass, this won’t apply as much to you.

Typically, we recommend waiting for 5-6 months before using any chemical or fertilizers to allow the roots to fully establish. There are always exceptions, so don’t hesitate to reach out to me for some advice! For those of us who have St. Augustine, make sure you are keeping the decks up on your lawnmower to help with density! I, for one, hate a shaggy-looking lawn, but in cases of thinning grass, sometimes we have to take the bad in with the good and let it grow out just a bit.

In terms of fertilizer, there are potassium-based granule products that are fairly easy to apply and are a great way to prepare your lawn for winter and spring. For those of you trying to beef up your Bermuda, potassium might be the better option than the typical nitrogen source. Anyone trying to cut down on broad-leafed winter weeds, NOW is the time for pre-emergent!!! DON’T FORGET that your yard is still going to require DEEP and INFREQUENT watering.

Reach out to us for a lawn-specific recommendation! We also offer lawn painting and winter rye application for erosion control or just to have a winter green lawn!!
